RTV 6: Flaherty & Collins Properties Working Toward 38th Street & Illinois Revitalization

INDIANAPOLIS — A north-side neighborhood that’s been labeled a federal food desert could finally be getting a grocery store.

After purchasing the United Way building, Flaherty and Collins Properties is now working closely with North United Methodist Church and Midtown Indianapolis to try to bring affordable housing and more retail to the 38th and Illinois streets area.

Although plans are still in their early stages, one idea is to place a grocery store right along 38th Street where North United Methodist’s parking lot currently lies. Above it, plans call for 100 affordable apartments to match another 100 potentially being built where United Way is situated.
