Flaherty & Collins Breaks Ground on AREA Apartments in Downtown Mundelein

Flaherty & Collins Properties proudly broke ground yesterday on AREA Apartments, a transit-oriented, mixed-use development located in the heart of downtown Mundelein. Once complete, the $90 million project will feature 225 multifamily units, 17 rental townhomes, retail space, and a parking garage, bringing new energy and opportunity to a long-vacant site in the Village’s core.

Situated on the North Central Service line of Metra, AREA offers convenient rail access to both Antioch and Downtown Chicago and is within walking distance of downtown Mundelein and the Village’s municipal buildings. The development will serve as a key catalyst for downtown revitalization—an initiative that has received strong backing from several Village administrations over the past few decades.

“AREA represents the kind of vibrant, transit-oriented development that aligns with Flaherty & Collins’ mission to build communities that elevate the urban living experience,” said Julie Collier, Principal and Vice President of Development at Flaherty & Collins. “We’re honored to partner with the Village of Mundelein on a project that will spark continued investment and growth in this dynamic downtown corridor.”

This latest public-private development builds on Flaherty & Collins’ growing portfolio of transformative communities across the country. AREA will be the company’s eighth transit-oriented, high-density, mixed-use development throughout Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Connecticut, and Washington D.C.

AREA is expected to be completed in 2026 and will deliver high-quality housing designed to complement and enhance the surrounding community.
